UPDATE FROM EXECUTIVE OF YORK SIMCOE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Happy New Year!

It is hard to believe that the 2011/2012 season is heading into the final stretch!  To date, a number of our teams have won significant tournaments and are leading the ETA standings.  Congratulations to the players for the outstanding efforts on behalf of York Simcoe Express.

As an update from the AGM, there were a few focus items for the executive to focus on for the 2011/2012 season.  Namely:

·         By-laws & Rules of Operation      ·         Coach Development     ·         Coach Selection

By-laws & Rules of Operation - York Simcoe Express is incorporated under the laws of the Province of Ontario and is a not for profit association and operating with no primary gain or other benefits to individual members.  The By-laws and Rules of Operation  for our association have existed in draft form since 1992 and are very out-dated.  The executive volunteers and a few of the membership who volunteered their time have spent a significant amount of their personal time working under the guidance of the OMHA to updated these documents.  While not yet complete, we are very close to having documents ready to be presented in either a special meeting or the AGM for approval.

Coach Development -The executive struck a committee to look at coaching development and the recommendation was that one size doesn’t fit all.  Therefore, the association have passed that each team, for their staff have a process to submit their request to attend courses up to an annual total of $1500 (per team staff) to the executive for approval.  If approved, the applicant would take the course and submit their expenses to be covered by the association.  Examples of development would be advanced coaching, player development, etc.

Coach Selection - The executive struck a committee to look at the process of coach selection for York Simcoe Express.  We heard the best practices presented from each of the areas that make up our association boundaries.   The committee recommended 22 items for consideration of the board.  The executive are still digesting all of the 22 recommendations , however, many have been incorporated into the by-laws and rules of operation.

As a volunteer organization, there is much more work to be done then for which we have volunteers.  If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact Kim Fennell or any of the executive.  Currently, we are immediately searching for a Secretary to join the board.  We are looking for people that are passionate about kids, their development (on and off the ice) and co-ordinating programs to enable our association to be the best Minor Hockey association possible!!

YSE NOVICE TEAM CAPTURES THEIR OWN ‘MIRACLE ON ICE’ IN LAKE PLACID

The York Simcoe Express Novice team traveled to Lake Placid, New York, last weekend (November 10-13), site of the famous ‘Miracle on Ice’ Olympic victory by the United States in 1980, and created a miracle of their own, going a perfect 5-0 in the CanAm Challenge Cup and sealing the gold medal in spectacular fashion with a 2-1 victory over the South Central Coyotes in the fourth overtime of the finals.

The tournament was the first of the year for the YSE Novice squad, with team members made up from Aurora, Newmarket and Georgina, and was capped off with the winning overtime goal by Evan Fraccaro in a one-on-one format. Ryan Bryden opened the scoring for YSE, assisted by Nicholas Giorgio.

The team put on a scoring clinic over the course of the weekend, with 39 goals for and just 8 goals against over five games, and was led by Amadeus Lombardi, who finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with 12 goals and six assists in five games played. Seven Express players finished in the Top 10 in tournament scoring.

“We’re all very proud of the boys,” said Marshall Starkman, head coach of the York Simcoe Express Novice team (2003’s). “This was their first tournament together and they had their sights set on the gold medal from the moment we arrived in Lake Placid. It was a great experience for them as hockey players, but also as young men. We’re looking forward to carrying the momentum from this great weekend on to our regular season.”

In addition to their outstanding performance in tournament play, a number of players represented the team in the tournament Skills Competitions which included a Shootout and Relay Race. As he did during tournament play, Lombardi demonstrated his scoring prowess on his way to winning the shootout portion of the Skills Competition as Christian Haggith represented the team in net. Owen Hollett, Connor McGill, Owen Papulkas and Nicholas Giorgio represented the team in the Relay portion of the competition.

“These boys were excited to compete, but even more excited to represent their towns in an international tournament,” said Starkman. “It was very rewarding to see them not only demonstrate the skills that have made them very good, young hockey players, but to also demonstrate the sportsmanship that makes them such great young men in the making.”Novice CanAm 2011

MAJOR MIDGETS WIN GOLD AT OTTAWA TOURNAMENT

After winning all 4 games in the preliminary round the Express eliminated the pesky Oshawa Generals 2-1 in the quarter finals.

A much tougher test in the semi-finals against the defending champion Markham Waxers, fighting back all game and winning in double overtime 4-3 with 1:51 left on the clock. The Sunday afternoon Championship Game saw the Oakville Rangers return to the tournament finals once again. With a great team performance the Express prevailed 3-2 but not without a scare of a last second attack by the Rangers.

Also we would like to congratulate Justin Maiolino for earning honors as the Tournament MVP. In addition to the hardware, Justin will be bringing home a $500.00 bursary, to be used for future academic endeavors.

On behalf of myself and the coaching staff we would like to congratulate Justin and the rest of the team for a great tournament.

Well done boys!

Manager YSE Major Midget
